Engaging with the Bible

The goal of this series is simply to develop habits which help us to get to know God more.
ENGAGE
Ask the group to volunteer their experiences:
o        Their best experience of reading the Bible
o        Their most disappointing experience of reading the Bible.

Establish the total time spent reading the Bible in a week by your group without embarrassing anybody (unless they can’t add up).
o        Distribute a scrap of paper to each person.
o        Think of a number between 1 and 100 and add to it the number of minutes you spend reading or listening to) the Bible in a week.
o        Pass the scrap to the next person. They should add their minutes spent reading the Bible and write it on their clean paper.
o        When the sum has come full circle., deduct the number you first thought of. You have the total bible time of your group.
Its completely confidential as long as you destroy the paper scraps
EVALUATE
1.       Choose a short verse or part from Scripture (no more than 10 words) and ask people to meditate on it for three minutes. Play instrumental music to minimize other noises.

At the end ask these evaluation questions:

o   What did you get out of it?
o   As a way of engaging with the Bible what works or does not work for ?

2.         Pass out copies of the Wordlive Daily Bible Reading email. For a sample click HERE. Ask people to read them through. Allow five minutes. Ask the evaluation questions above.

REFLECT
Ask questions:
o        As a spiritual practice, the reason for engaging with the Bible is to get to know God. How might this work for you?
o        Why have you not spent more time engaging with the Bible?
o        What one thing could you do to increase your time with the Bible?
o        What help do you need?
o        How could you make yourself accountable.
