Talking about the cross from a Pentecostal perspective.

MP900449125Here are a few resources that may help with my CCT Good Friday talk.

You can find my source for the statistics here.

I have been strongly influenced by recent thinking done by James K A Smith on Pentecostal Epistemology.

You can get his book here

or watch a lecture on the subject here.

My father's story can be found here and my mother's here.

The unedited script for my talk is here.

If you would like to pursue any of the ideas I have raised you should be able to comment below.

The opposite spirit

MP900386815This Sunday we were back to talking about the cross and made some small reference to spiritual warfare and the idea of ACTING IN THE OPPOSITE SPIRIT.

I first heard of this idea from Gerald Coates but I believe it might have developed in YWAM with Loren Cunningham, the founder.

Anyway, if you want to know more, here and here are two helpful articles which you can read at leisure.

Awesome cross of power

Its 10.20 on Saturday night.  I've got tomorrow's talk as far as I can - just a case of sleeping on it and praying the detail through in the morning.

Here are the bits you might want to follow up the session.

Wordles are a neat way of summarising and analysing text.  You can make your own at

Col 2

Colossians 2:13-15

1 cor 15

1 Corinthians 15:50-57

Here's the song which tells it better than I ever could.

And if you want to see the longer version of the HBO clip of the Roman triumphal procession, including a gory reminder of what happens to defeated enemies...

Awesome cross of freedom and forgiveness

The base from which I am working totay is Ephesians 1:7

For by the blood of Christ we are set free, that is our sins are forgiven.

That says it all really but the other ideas come from Colossians 1:19b-23a and Galatians 6:1-5.

Here's the fantastic movie I am showing towards the end.

We're not the only ones...

iStock000013852845Smalljpgscal...who like stories. Here's a new site where you can post and read about life in the church.  Why not think about contributing?

MP900443029There's a whole lot of good stuff churning around in Dayspring and it feels like decision time on some next steps.   But I'm not sure.

I have a plan
to spend time thinking about what should be happening next before starting to ask other people what they are feeling and seeing and am wondering whether we should just wait for a while before going into action people mode.

  • Cabaret seems to be getting ready for a step up.  One guest said that, for him, it was a pity we didn't have more frequent events.  Another guest felt God touch her during the entertainment.  But as of today we have no acts booked for next year.
  • We have come to the end of our current funding for Open Blue, too.  We knew this would happen and its a great opportunity to renew direction but its still scarey and we need a whole lot of wisdom.
  • Then we are pushing our limits as far as accommodation for the adult talks at SUNDAYS is concerned.  That's great but it still requires discernment and action.

I had chance to start listening to a series of talks about church life in which Alan Roxburgh which got me making connexions.  He was cautioning denominational leaders against acting without understanding and wasn't particularly keen on being vision driven either.  He said that we are too keen to jump from Good Friday to Easter Sunday, avoiding pain and reflection.  He went on to talk about the road to Emmaus story.  If you aren't up to speed, its where Jesus, on the day he rose again, met two very upset disciples who were trying to process what was going on.  They didn't recognise him (something which happens several times in those few weeks).

Jesus could have introduced himself straight off and lowered their anxiety level.  He chose not to, taking them through some steps which made their hearts burn as they increasingly understood what was going on.  I wonder whether that is what we need at the moment: in a situation where the options look puzzling but obvious--if you know what I mean--to take the time to understand how God thinks about what is going on.

It could raise our game to a whole new level.
