Talking about the cross from a Pentecostal perspective.

MP900449125Here are a few resources that may help with my CCT Good Friday talk.

You can find my source for the statistics here.

I have been strongly influenced by recent thinking done by James K A Smith on Pentecostal Epistemology.

You can get his book here

or watch a lecture on the subject here.

My father's story can be found here and my mother's here.

The unedited script for my talk is here.

If you would like to pursue any of the ideas I have raised you should be able to comment below.

The opposite spirit

MP900386815This Sunday we were back to talking about the cross and made some small reference to spiritual warfare and the idea of ACTING IN THE OPPOSITE SPIRIT.

I first heard of this idea from Gerald Coates but I believe it might have developed in YWAM with Loren Cunningham, the founder.

Anyway, if you want to know more, here and here are two helpful articles which you can read at leisure.

Awesome cross of power

Its 10.20 on Saturday night.  I've got tomorrow's talk as far as I can - just a case of sleeping on it and praying the detail through in the morning.

Here are the bits you might want to follow up the session.

Wordles are a neat way of summarising and analysing text.  You can make your own at

Col 2

Colossians 2:13-15

1 cor 15

1 Corinthians 15:50-57

Here's the song which tells it better than I ever could.

And if you want to see the longer version of the HBO clip of the Roman triumphal procession, including a gory reminder of what happens to defeated enemies...

Awesome cross of freedom and forgiveness

The base from which I am working totay is Ephesians 1:7

For by the blood of Christ we are set free, that is our sins are forgiven.

That says it all really but the other ideas come from Colossians 1:19b-23a and Galatians 6:1-5.

Here's the fantastic movie I am showing towards the end.

We're not the only ones...

iStock000013852845Smalljpgscal...who like stories. Here's a new site where you can post and read about life in the church.  Why not think about contributing?

PoolsideI need to round off this series so that I can get on to blogging about the stuff we want to reflect on in the Autumn.

I did say that I was hoping it would be easier to be more awake to God's presence on holiday than in the normal run of life.  No dice, it seems.  (Sorry about the view from between my feet by the way buts that where I was laying thinking about it, with my ipod playing and a coffee easily to hand).  Somehow, for me, it seems that the ordinary routine of life is the better place for being aware of the presence of Jesus.  That's not to say that I'm seeing any significant process.  On the basis that knowing God's closeness is different from praying, worshipping or even thinking about him, I am still a practical atheist.  Most of my days do not happen with a clear awareness of Jesus beside me but its easier being back doing normal things.

That's not to say that it seems unimportant.  I've had a few texts about whats happening with our Teen Spirit guys at Soul Survivor.  It certainly sounds as though some of them have had opportunity of being more aware of God than ever before.  That's great.  But somehow we have to learn from one another how to have that same wakefulness every day.  Otherwise these guys will be back at school and the encounters of the summer will get so far away that they will seem like a dream.  And unless Jesus is closer than their best friend...

So do keep poking me about this.  It really matters.  I sort of hope that it creeps back into all our conversations so that we help one another with GOOD PRACTICE FOR GOD AWARENESS

I've just started my own quest for "The Meaning of God's presence"... what that looks like, what it means, and it's an interesting journey so far,(albeit only 6 days into the process). After spending the last 10months Saying "where are you God", and declaring he must of hit the mute button. Trying to convince myself it's not just about the feeling, but the knowing" It turns out He was actually here all along! and the "I will never leave you or forsake you" line is true! So if it wasn't God that sudden up'd and left, what happened? I'm seeking right, I'm hungry, i'm praying, i'm dancing, sing, i'm sitting... Not a dicky bird of revealation in sight! Not a ready brek moment, nothing! I was listening to a sermon and the guy said "The prayer team worshipped until they knew the manifest presence of God was amongst them" So that clicked with me and then he Said " God is always with us yeah, we know that, but there are times when the Presence comes and you know it"... so this might be low level stuff but for me it kind of got me at a deeper level. I became aware of a cloud infront of me, and I thought "The whole earth is full of his glory" He become the atmosphere in my house and not just my house it was everywhere. He was everywhere. And as i became more aware so His presence increased, until I realised He is always before me, that life is sustained by God and God alone, In him we move and have our being... In His hands is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:10 God has proved that he is life sustaining, in Jesus we see the demonstration of God’s life sustaining power, In the resurrection, we see him raise Jesus from the dead to ever lasting life… In him we see the proof and power of our Almighty Father. So yes, my awareness of God has suddenly awoken, i'm purposeful towards Him now, i'm communicating to him and not at him, expecting and knowing that he is in constant communion with me. x x
