The opposite spirit

MP900386815This Sunday we were back to talking about the cross and made some small reference to spiritual warfare and the idea of ACTING IN THE OPPOSITE SPIRIT.

I first heard of this idea from Gerald Coates but I believe it might have developed in YWAM with Loren Cunningham, the founder.

Awesome cross of freedom and forgiveness

The base from which I am working totay is Ephesians 1:7

For by the blood of Christ we are set free, that is our sins are forgiven.

That says it all really but the other ideas come from Colossians 1:19b-23a and Galatians 6:1-5.

No wedding garment?—a list of excuses

Last Sunday we discussed the need for a wedding garment in Matthew 22. It was a case of COME JUST AS YOU ARE BUT DON’T STAY AS YOU ARE.
There are scenarios which make sense of the king’s dress code. One is that he had a whole set of robes to borrow. The other is that all he was expecting was a clean robe. Both are tenable. 
You did a great job of brainstorming excuses for both scenarios. Here they are.
 
Scenario 1: Wash it!
  1. Broken washing machine (dried up stream)
  2. Only had one robe
  3. No time to wash it
  4. Thought it was clean
  5. Differing standards
  6. Drunk, not on this planet. Unaware.
  7. Too lazy. Too much effort
  8. Lack of respect for host
  9. Unprepared
  10. Too tired
  11. Just dropped in.
  12. Too proud to ask for help
  13. Wanted benefits without conditions
  14. Too hungry to change clothes
  15. Unable to see dirt
  16. Travelled far
  17. Washed it but spilled something on the way
 
Scenario 2: Borrow it!
  1. Didn’t know what was expected
  2. Didn’t want to wear borrowed robe
  3. Like his own robe which he had inherited
  4. Arrived too late
  5. Wrong fit
  6. Wanted people to see him as he was
  7. Didn’t feel he belonged
  8. Too dirty to wear clean clothes
  9. Borrowed robe was unfashionable
  10. Wanted to look individual
  11. Felt unworthy
  12. Arrogant
  13. Borrowed robe uncomfortable
  14. Independent
  15. Didn’t want to be noticed
  16. Personal preference
  17. Missed robes on the way in.
  18. Disrespect
  19. Not willing to change
  20. Sneaked in the back way
  21. Didn’t know the rules
  22. Overconfident—take me as I am
  23. Too much hassle
  24. Rebelling
  25. Principle: You invited me. Does it matter what I wear?
  26. Cant be bothered to queue
